Board of Directors Elected for 1st term January 2025 - December 2026

Rhea Speights

They/Them

Alabama, US

Current Student in SBMC program

Bio:

I am an artist and teacher, living and working in Alabama, United States. I hold an MFA in Dance and am currently a student of Body-Mind Centering® under the guidance of Mary Lou Seereiter at Moving Within in Lorane, Oregon. I am on schedule to complete my SME certification in June 2026. My non-profit experience includes founding a 501(c)(3) multimedia-art group, serving as artistic director of a small dance company, and serving as president on the board of directors for a mid-sized dance company. Since 2022, I have been on the dance faculty at the University of Alabama. www.rheaspeights.org

I am running for the board of BMCA because BMC® is an increasingly important part of my life, and I would like to be involved in supporting the health of the organizing body that keeps us in community. I value the research that is shared through the newsletters, forums, and Currents journal, and the recent online gathering was invigorating for my movement practice. The perspective I bring is of an artist and teacher in the rural southeastern United States. I grew up working-class, the child of a mechanic and a high-school teacher, and now I am an academic at a University. In this position, I do a lot of listening to connect to students with backgrounds similar to and very different from my own. Additionally, serving on the BMCA board interests me because I would like the experience of working administratively in a Body-Mind Centering® kind of way.

  • Eligibility:

    • All members of BMCA in good standing for the past year are invited to declare candidacy. If you know someone who might be interested, please forward the information and invite them to apply.

    • Candidates may be any type of member: Friend, Student, Associate or Professional.

    • Board members are expected to keep up with ongoing board communications and to be responsive to time-sensitive decisions and communications. The hours of involvement vary, with a minimum of 6 hours for meetings per month, and additional hours for tasks and projects.

    • The Board also organizes themselves into different committees in order to carry out special projects and initiatives.

    • Yearly, the Board holds a longer 2-day meeting, usually on a weekend in May for Vision and Strategic Planning.

    • Projects we are currently working on include online events and member platform development that require board members to volunteer extra time outside of meetings. For example, the 2024 3-day online event held on our new member platform was conceived and created by Board volunteer time.

    • Upcoming projects include future events, website development, and storage and archives, among others.
