The Somatic Movement Educator Program in Taiwan

The Somatic Movement Educator Program in Taiwan began in 2022, and will be graduating its first certified group of SME’s in August 2025. Bob Lehnberg and Lisa Clark are Co-Education Directors, Mei-Chu Liu is the Administrative Director.

The Somatic Education Society of Taiwan offers an ideal environment to hold an SME program. With multiple studios, it has enough space and props to create a BMC® learning environment. Students have attended from Taiwan, Japan, S. Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and China.

Classes are taught in English and Mandarin, with simultaneous translation. We have three devoted translators with backgrounds in somatic fields, with a fluency in both languages. A diverse faculty from Japan, Europe, Taiwan, and USA, has offered different perspectives and learning styles, as well as cultural backgrounds. Having a BMC® SME training program in Taiwan has offered many opportunities in growing our understanding of BMC® concepts in an N. Asian culture. We look forward to developing  the program in the years to come.

In this presentation Mei-Chu Liu, Lisa, and Bob will be discussing the program in both Mandarin and English. Mei-Chu will be sharing a visual tour of the program in Mandarin, a discussion follows with Lisa and Bob in English.

Mei-Chu Liu
Having earned a Ph.D. in Somatics Study from Ohio State University and completed the 4-year Body-Mind Centering® certification program in Massachusetts in 1998, I have dedicated myself to somatic education in schools and somatic practice for dancers and athletes. My background includes traditional dance, martial arts, Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung, and Yoga, as well as Western movement arts such as modern dance and Jazz dance. I have also studied various Western somatic practices, including Alexander Technique, Awareness through Movement, Continuum, Ideokinesis, and Bartenieff Fundamentals.

In 2019, I became a GYROTONIC® master trainer and in 2022, a GYROKINESIS® master trainer. Additionally, I have been a certified studio instructor in POLESTAR PILATES® since 2006. Encouraged by Bonnie Cohen, founder of Body-Mind Centering®, I completed the Body-Mind Centering® teacher training program from 2012 to 2014 and became a BMC® certified Teacher in 2018. This led to invitations to teach BMC® workshops in Japan, Hong Kong, Beijing, Hong Chou, and Shanghai.

In 2015, I completed the Infant Developmental Movement Education certificate program of BMC® and became a certified movement educator for babies. I am also the only So-tai Technique certified instructor in Taiwan, authorized by Nanako Harada, a prominent So-tai Technique teacher from Japan. Together, we have offered So-tai Technique training courses for the Somatic Education Society of Taiwan.

As a professor in the Department of Somatics & Sport Leisure Industry at National Taitung University, my research focuses on movement re-education and the integration of Eastern and Western somatic approaches for movement training and somatic wellness. I also run an Experiential Anatomy program based on BMC® and organize a certificate program for the Somatic Wellness Training Program in Taiwan.
