A model of Social Somatics:
BMC® and Dynamic Embodiment at St Mary's University (Bay Area, California) 

Martha Eddy will discuss the combined history of BMC® and the influences of other somatic systems such as Laban/Bartenieff Studies, Zero Balancing, Kestenberg Movement Profile, Katsugen Undo among others. We will then discuss as a panel of esteemed educators how these weave into Dynamic Embodiment and the curriculum at St Mary's to help establish Social Somatic inquiry at the university level.  

Bios

Martha Eddy
Martha Eddy, DEP, CMA, RSMT, EdD, and Licensed Certified Teacher of BMC, is an international advocate of Somatic Movement Education & Therapy and speaker on Health, Wellness, and the BodyMind connection for over 30 years. The author of Mindful Movement: The Evolution of the Somatic Arts and Conscious Action, Dr. Eddy has a new book coming out this year titled Dynamic Embodiment of the Sun Salutation. She is a lecturer on embodied cognition, eco-somatics, the interaction of neuro-motor and socio-emotional development, and the role of the body and movement in peace education and violence prevention. She is the Founder and Director of the Dynamic Embodiment® Somatic Movement Therapy Training program, Co-Founder and Director of Programming and Research at Moving for Life, and Co-Founder and Director of Somatic Studies at Moving on Center. Since 1981, she has served at Laban Institute as faculty of special programs, certification programs, President, Executive Director, Advisory Council member and Senior Research Associate. Martha has served on the certification program faculty for the School for Body-Mind Centering® and on the boards of CORD, NDEO, and as President of ISMETA. In 2017, she received the National Award for Outstanding Leadership in Dance Education from NDEO.

Rosana Barragan
Rosana Barragan is a dance and movement artist and educator. Her graduate degree in Dance Studies from the Laban Centre/City University in London integrates three scholarly areas: choreography, choreological studies and aesthetics. Rosana is certified as a Body Mind Dancing teacher and registered through ISMETA as a Dynamic Embodiment Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist. Rosana has worked as a professor of dance at universities in her native country, Colombia, and is currently tenure track faculty at Saint Mary’s College of California where she teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate dance programs. Rosana is an advocate of dance and somatics on the West Coast and owns a dance school for children, which method, is part of enrichment programs at schools in San Francisco. Her choreographic work has been awarded internationally for its success at embracing social awareness.

Mariko Tanabe
Mariko Tanabe is inspired by the healing powers of human movement and expression. She has been performing and presenting her choreographic works during the past 25 years in Asia, Europe, and North America. Mariko teaches workshops to dance companies and at universities, art centers and schools throughout the world. She mentors artists and maintains a private practice working with individuals of all backgrounds. For 12 years she worked with American dance master Erick Hawkins in NYC as a principal dancer, teacher and rehearsal director. She is the founder and director of the Body-Mind Centering® Licensed Training Program in Montreal, a Certified Teacher and Practitioner of Body-Mind Centering®, as well as an Infant Developmental Movement Educator, Yoga teacher and Registered Somatic Therapist.
