Description

The Spine: Embryology, Developmental Movement, and Dynamic Alignment
In these workshops we will explore the embryology of the spine and it's role in our earliest developmental patterns - and how it's fluid origins and many movement possibilities allow us to find a dynamic sense of alignment in any position.

Saturday:
10am - 12pm
Asana class

1:30 - 5pm
Embryology & Anatomy of the Spine: Our spine first begins as a fluid process that gradually develops it's own containment and structure. We will trace the embryological development of the spine from the primitive streak through the notochord to the intervertebral discs and vertebrae that we are born with, and will explore how a calm quiet spine can still be fluid, moveable and responsive.

Sunday:
10am - 1pm
Spinal Developmental Patterns: Our earliest vertebrate movement patterns are oriented around the movements of our head and tail, and development later progresses to add the limbs as support for the movement of the spine. We will explore the reflexes and developmental patterns that underlie our earliest movements as babies - rolling, flexing and extending, and side bending, and see where these patterns are still present as a support for our adult movements.

2:30 - 4:30pm
Things that Get Said: This is a chance to ask your own questions about things that get said in anatomy, asana and alignment. Amy will respond to your questions, talk about some commonly made statements about asana and anatomy (things like "straighten the spine to twist" or "keeping your knee over your ankle keeps it safe") and share her analysis of the underlying assumptions that are sometimes mistaken about how the body works.

and on Saturday night do a 'meet Amy/ SME Q&A' event
