A workshop with Alys Longley & Kim Sargent-Wishart

Join somatic researchers, movement artists and writers Alys & Kim in a day of embodied poetics and choreographic experiments, dropping into the poetic, spatial and generative dimensions of the body. 

This full-day workshop includes somatic movement explorations based in Body-Mind Centering®, choreographic play and extended transdisciplinary practices to bring body-life into written, visual and spatial expression. All are welcome. The workshop will be of particular interest to dance and performance-makers, practice-led researchers in the arts, and anyone interested in somatics and embodied ways of generating experiential knowledge.

Intructor's Bio

An interdisciplinary artist, writer and teacher, Alys Longley's work exists as live performance, artist-book, installation, film, education curriculum, poetry, performance writing and lecture-demonstration. Over the last decade, Alys has been exploring mistranslation studies, working across languages and disciplines to explore the spill of ideas beyond conventional systems of meaning, through a series of international artistic-research projects in Berlin (Germany), Santiago (Chile), Coimbra (Portugal), NYC (US), Chicago (US), Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland (NZ), Poneke/ Welllington (NZ), Vienna (Austria) and Stockholm (Sweden). Alys has been based in the Department of Dance Studies, University of Auckland, since 2006, where she is currently an Associate Professor.

Kim Sargent-Wishart, PhD, is an artist, researcher, educator & writer specializing in somatic education, physical practices & contemplative photography. Research interests include experiential embryology and physiology as models for creative practice, and modes of presence and perception. Kim enjoys teaching somatic and creative methodologies for a range of audiences in support of personal, professional and creative development. Certified as a Body-Mind Centering® Teacher and Registered Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist, Kim has practiced movement education and bodywork professionally since the early 1990s. Her arts practice is influenced by Miksang contemplative photography and dance/movement improvisation. Kim is the co-director of Somatic Education Australasia (SEA), co-editor of The Art of Embodiment (2021), and co-founder of ASTER Association.
